Sherlock Holmes: The Genealogical Connection

Please join us as Canadian lawyers and authors Clifford S. Goldfarb and Hartley R. Nathan present Sherlock Holmes: The Genealogical Connection, where they will explore the family trees of Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, `Old Abrahams` (one of many Jewish characters introduced by Conan Doyle) and a surprise connection to Jack the Ripper. Starting with a review of the Sherlock Holmes phenomenon, they will explore the amazing life and accomplishments of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the many plays, movies and television productions inspired by him. Nathan & Goldfarb will demonstrate how Sherlockians "play the game" (i.e. assuming that the stories are true, that Holmes and Watson are real people and that Watson was the author of most of the stories) and will examine whether anti-Semitic language can be found in the stories.

Hartley R. Nathan QC is a partner in the Toronto law firm of Minden Gross LLP where he practices corporate law. He was made a Queen`s Counsel in 1982. He is the author of several legal texts and a member of JGS-Toronto. He is the author of Who Was Jack the Ripper?

Clifford S. Goldfarb is counsel to Gardiner Roberts LLP in Toronto, specializing in charities and non-profits. He is a member of JGS-Toronto and Chairman of the Friends of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection at the Toronto Reference Library. He is the author of The Great Shadow: Arthur Conan Doyle, Brigadier Gerard and Napoleon.

Nathan and Goldfarb have co-authored Investigating Sherlock Holmes: Solved & Unsolved Mysteries (2014), copies of which will be available for purchase. Both have taken turns as President of the Bootmakers of Toronto (Toronto`s Sherlock Holmes Society).
